The 7 Deadly Food Additives:

The healthiest diets are those rich in whole natural foods- and although most know this, Americans tend to consume a lot of processed foods.  Watch out for these additives above all the rest- and don't eat anything with them in the ingredients!  If you do, you'll pay for it with your good health. 

1. High Fructose Corn Syrup

Cornstarch is converted to liquid syrup and is used as a cheap sweetener in much of food manufacturing.  Side effects of this include a fatty liver, digestive problems, high cholesterol. and diabetes to name just a couple. 

2. Trans Fats (hydrogenated and partially-hydrogenated oils)

These fats are man made from adding hydrogen to oil to make it last longer, giving it a good taste and firmer texture.  It's in most convenience and fast foods- including margarine, peanut butter, cookies and pastries, microwave popcorn and restaurant foods.  There is no safe consumable amount of trans fats.  Side effects are high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes and cancer.  DON'T eat it!

3. Artificial Preservatives

These were made to help food last longer and are in almost everything due to their low cost.  The true cost is the health risks you pay when you consume them- hyperactivity, cancer tumors, skin and eye irritation and asthmatic problems.  Many countries ban them but they're in abundance in AMERICA!  The label could read: nitrites, nitrates, benzoates, sorbates, propionates, sulfites, BHA, or BHT.

4. Hormones/Antibiotics

Farming animals for consumption has drastically changed in the last 100 years. They are in close quarters, feed on a "non-traditional diet of corn, soy & grain, instead of grazing on green fields and are given antibiotics for disease prevention and rapid growth. Look for beef, chicken and eggs marked as grass fed or cage free and a label of "no antibiotics or hormones." These medicines reduce our health.

5. Bleached Flour

Chlorine gas is often used to whiten fresh milled flour, making the flour irritating and dangerous to our health.  A byproduct called alloxan is left in the flour and is toxic- so China and Europe banned the use of bleaching!  Bleached flour is found in pasta's, breads, pizza, crackers - for starters.

6. Artificial Colors

To increase the appeal of food, most food manufacturing companies add coloring to their food.   Candy, desserts, soda, chips, cold cereals, canned fruit, yogurts and multivitamins have artificial color.  The side effects cause hyperactivity in children & increase risks for tumors, cancer and allergies.  The worst & most common one's are: Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Red 40, Red 3, Blue 1, Blue 2, Orange B, Citrus Red 2 and Green 3. 

7. Added/Processed Sugars

The average person reading this consumes between 90 to 180 pounds of sugar per year! Compare that with 100 years ago- when the average was less than 1 pound.  We do have a sugar addiction problem and that leads to health problems like diabets and obesity.  Did you know sugar is in pasta sauce, peanut butter and popcorn?  Sugar in disguise include: agave nectar, fructose syrup or even juice concentrate.   Be a smart shopper and read labels if you need to eat processed or packaged foods.  They'll cost you so much more in the long run!
